Premier Guarantee, a fresh approach to new home warranties PG Acoustic Testing

Acoustic Testing

Acoustic testing allows developers to demonstrate the level of acoustic performance within their developments. Testing allows you to comply with Building Regulations and perhaps more importantly, demonstrate to potential buyers that your properties are built in line with legislation and regulation, such as the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Acoustic tests are carried out by measuring the efficiency of each construction type you develop. Typically, units that are a similar size, made of the same materials and built using the same methods of construction would make up a construction type. If you are unsure as to how many construction types you have on your development, please refer this to Building Control. To provide you with a rating, only 10% of each type needs to be tested.

How does it work?

There are two types of tests, airborne and impact.

  • Airborne tests measure how sound travels through the walls and floors of your properties and are carried out using a loudspeaker which emits “pink noise” (a loud noise, produced over a range of frequencies). A measurement of the sound pressure level is then taken from inside and outside of the room being tested and the sound insulation is calculated.
  • Impact tests use a tapping device, which impacts repeatedly on the floor of the property. Measurements are taken from the difference in sound pressure levels between the room being tested and the room immediately below it.

Because of their construction, housing units only need airborne tests. Flats and apartments require both types of tests to demonstrate compliance with Part E of the Building Regulations.

Once completed, you will receive a full report on your results which will give indications of any areas which need to be addressed
